Strings demystified

The type, gauge and tension of your strings can be as important as the frame itself

With hundreds of different strings on the market, choosing one can be daunting.

Jim Warner has been part of the stringing team at Wimbledon for the last five years and has strung thousands of rackets.

“It’s a bit like having your car serviced,” Warner, a stringer for Dunlop Tennis, explains. “You can be the best driver in the world and have the best car in the world but if you’ve got flat, bald tyres then you’re going to be all over the road. It’s the same with your tennis racket. It doesn’t matter what frame you have, if it doesn’t have the correct strings it’s not much good to you.”

While a top professional tennis player may take up to ten rackets onto court for a single match, a club player may neglect to get their racket restrung even once a season. The same frame with new strings can make your stick feel like an entirely different racket. Your game style, level of play and how often you frequent a tennis court will dictate what type of string is best for you, while your budget will also impact on your final choice.

Racket technology may have come a long way since the days of John McEnroe and Jimmy Connors, but the natural gut string still remains a firm favourite among many of today’s pros. With natural elasticity it can generate a lot of power, but lacks durability and can be expensive to replace regularly. At the other end of the spectrum are the harder, monofilament strings also used by many pros. Ultradurable, the rigid polyester strings increase the capacity for spin.

“Many pros use a mix of natural gut and polyester strings, known as a hybrid,” says Warner. “It may well be that you would have the durable strings in the main and then the softer string in the cross string so it doesn’t injure your arm.” If you like the feel of natural gut but the wallet won’t stretch, go for a multifilament string, but if you’re a string buster, the synthetic gut may be better suited to your game. Once you’ve picked out your string, you need to consider the gauge, or thickness.

“The thinner the string, the more elastic it is, so you’re able to generate greater power and spin, but it is more likely to break,” Warner explains. “If you opt for a thicker string, it is more durable but it may impact performance.”

If things weren’t complicated enough for the uninitiated, there are two labelling systems in place – the international version and the US one, which is more commonly used. A beginner will normally start out with 15 gauge strings, while the average club player should opt for 16-17. For those who can afford to restring their rackets more often, an 18 gauge is a better option.

Another element that varies between each racket is string pattern. A frame with an open string pattern (fewer strings) offers greater power and spin, while a denser string pattern (more strings) provides greater control. The final aspect to consider is string tension. Every racket has a recommended tension range, but as a general rule, a lower tension provides greater power while a higher tension has more control.

“At Wimbledon last year, the highest tension was 32kg and the lowest tension was 12kg which is a huge difference,” Warner says. It’s not only the type of player you are, it’s the type of surface you play on.

“If you’re playing [on the clay] at Roland Garros you tend to hit the ball with a lot more spin and a higher trajectory from further back, so you might go for a lower tension for a bit more power. At Wimbledon, where the ball goes a lot faster off the grass, the same player will go for higher tension which is going to give them more control.”

Tips from Roger Dalton, the head stringer at the Wimbledon Championships, on ‘How to choose the right strings and tension for you’.

Juniors and club players should go for the softest strings they can. Especially juniors, as the stiffer strings can damage your body. “Amateurs should be looking at using a soft string which will last them the longest period of time. There’s no point using a string that’s going to break within an hour. I have this conversation with parents the whole time, as their kids have been using the professional-type string which can be damaging to their body as they grow, with damage to their muscles and joints. They can damage kids because they are very stiff. They’re good for spin and durability and control, but not necessarily the best thing for vibration and shock and jarring of the joints. Once you’re physically strong and mature, those strings are fine.”

Juniors should be using the lowest tension they can. You can go down as low as the 40s or even the 30s. “You don’t want to go so low that you’re losing lots of durability and control, but you want to go as low as possible. With a lower tension, it doesn’t mean that you’re going to hit the ball faster, but that the ball will go deeper into the court. If you’re hitting the back fence the whole time, you have to do something about that. That might mean a higher tension. But if you can get by with a lower tension, and softer string, for as long as possible, you’re going to have a much longer career. With a lower tension, there’s going to be less fatigue. Tighter strings means more fatigue on muscles and joints.”

Older players tend to like a lower tension as that gives them easy power. “The former professionals who play exhibition matches at Wimbledon like to have a lower tension as they like the easy power they get from a lower tension.”

If, however, you keep on hitting the back fence you should think about playing with a higher tension. “You need more control over your shots and you’re going to get that with a higher tension. But there’s a trade-off because with a higher tension you’re going to have less depth on your shot, and you will experience more fatigue, and more shock and vibration. The professionals playing at Wimbledon use tensions between the 40s and the 70s. Serena Williams, because she has so much power, likes to have a pretty high tension, in the high 60s or low 70s. The highest tension I was ever asked for was by Monica Seles, who would ask for 95, but she was playing with a soft string, and she needed that high tension to give her the control she needed.”

Work out whether you prefer just polyester, just natural gut, or a combination of the two. “Players need to work out what suits them. Roger Federer, for example, uses a combination of different strings – natural gut in the main strings and a polyester-type string in the cross. Natural gut, made from beef intestine, is still used by a lot of professional players. But they find it a little bit too powerful, so they are dampening down that power with a stiffer, less resilient polyester string. Andy Murray uses polyester in the main string and natural gut in the cross – so the opposite way to Federer. Murray goes for that combination as he found natural gut in the main strings a little bit too powerful. So Murray is dampening down the power, and giving himself some control and spin, by using polyester in the main string. The main strings are usually the main driver of spin and control, and the cross strings give comfort and power. Novak Djokovic uses the same combination as Murray of polyester and natural gut. Some players do have only polyester. But that doesn’t give you much feel and power. It will give you oodles of control, but you’re losing out on power. It’s about finding the right combination of strings. You’re looking at the combination that will give you the right spin, control, comfort and power.”

While it’s cheaper using polyester strings, as they don’t break so quickly and last longer, that could be a false economy. “I’m always telling parents that they could end up spending more on physiotherapist’s bills than they would have done on more expensive strings.

You need to get on the practice court and try out different strings and different tensions. “It’s a question of trial and error, and personal preferences. “You need to experiment on the practice court to find the strings and tensions which suits your game, and which helps you without taking away any of your weapons.”

Think about the conditions every day. “Some players go on court with a variety of tensions. Murray, for example, has a range of rackets strung at around 60, and he’s sensitive about changes in tension. But some go on with rackets all strung at the same tension. You need to work out in practice what tension you want, or maybe adjust that after your first match. And try to stick with that. But you also need to think about the weather. On a warm day, the balls are going to fly faster through the air, so you want to increase the tension. And go for a lower tension on a cold or windy day. You have to take altitude, surface and balls into consideration when choosing a tension. The balls are different from tournament to tournament. You might want to bring the tension down if you need more depth on your shots. Of course, it’s not always possible to make changes if you have already started a match, although professionals can do that – and maybe that will be possible at some tournaments you play at.”
